Wet Room Installations explained

What it is

A wet room is a bathroom where the shower area is level with the rest of the floor, with no tray or step. Water drains away through a floor waste, and the room is made watertight so splashes don't matter.

Who it's for

People who want a clean, open look; families who want easier bathing for children; and anyone planning ahead for reduced mobility. If accessibility is the main goal, see our accessible bathrooms page too.

When you need it

When you're replacing a bathroom or shower room and want an open shower, when a tray is getting difficult to step over, or when you want a room that's simple to keep clean.

Why it pays to get it right

A wet room depends on what you can't see: the floor must fall correctly to the drain and the room must be properly waterproofed. Get that wrong and water ends up in the floor and the room below.

If it's left

What waiting
really costs

Water where it shouldn't be

Poorly waterproofed wet rooms leak into joists and ceilings below. By the time the stain shows, the damage is often well underway.

Standing water

If the floor doesn't fall correctly to the drain, water pools, making the room slippery and leaving marks.

Ripping it out twice

Fixing a failed wet room usually means taking the finished floor up again. Doing it properly first time is the cheaper option.

Struggling with a shower tray

If stepping into the shower is getting harder, waiting until it becomes a real problem makes daily life more difficult in the meantime.

Common mistakes

  • ×Treating a wet room as a normal shower with the tray removed.
  • ×Skipping proper waterproofing to save money.
  • ×Not considering where the floor drain will go.
  • ×Choosing a fitter without asking about their wet room experience.

How it works

Our process,
step by step

  1. 01

    Free quote visit

Scott comes out to your home, measures up and talks through the layout with you. He'll tell you honestly what will work with the space, where the pipework can and can't go, and what will give you the best result for your budget.

  2. 02

    Fixed-price quote

You receive a fixed price for the installation. That price doesn't creep up halfway through. If something unforeseen turns up once the old bathroom is stripped out, we stop and talk it through with you before any extra work goes ahead.

  3. 03

    Options and samples

Once you've accepted the quote, Laura sends over options for you to choose from. Depending on your selections, a home visit with samples follows, for example flooring options or aqua panels, so you can see them in your own light before anything is ordered.

  4. 04

    Installation by the same team

Scott carries out the work with the same trusted team he uses on every job. Laura keeps you updated on what's happening and when, and the space is left clean and tidy at the end of each day.

  5. 05

    Handover and guarantee

Everything is checked and run before we leave. Your installation is backed by our 2-year workmanship guarantee, and manufacturer warranties apply to the products themselves.

What you get

Why choose Harrison's

A price you can plan around

Fixed-price installations mean you know what the bathroom will cost before a single tile comes off the wall.

You're never left chasing

Laura handles bookings, samples and ordering, and keeps you informed at every stage, one of the things our reviews mention most.

Consistent workmanship

Scott has 20 years on the tools and works with the same trusted team on every job, so standards don't change from one day to the next.

Peace of mind afterwards

Every installation carries a 2-year workmanship guarantee, and we're fully insured.

Your suite, your choice

We can supply your bathroom suite, or fit one you've already chosen. Tiles are sourced by you, so you have full control over the look.

A tidy home during the work

The space is cleaned up at the end of each day, something customers like Robert Moreland have called out in their reviews.

In detail

Everything to know about
wet room installations

Floors, falls and drainage

The floor in a wet room is formed so water runs towards the drain. Scott will assess the existing floor at the quote visit and explain how drainage will work in your room.

Linear and centre drains each suit different layouts, and Scott will advise which makes sense for your space.

Waterproofing

Because the shower is open to the room, the floor and walls in the wet area are made watertight before the finishes go on. This is the part of the job that protects your home long after we've left.

Screens and finishes

Many wet rooms use a fixed glass screen to keep splashes contained while staying open. Tiles are sourced by you; other wall finishes such as aqua panels can be shown at a samples visit depending on your selections.

Wet room or walk-in shower?

A walk-in shower with a low-profile tray gives a similar look with less floor work. Scott will tell you honestly which option suits your room and your budget, and quote it at a fixed price.

Living with a wet room

Wet rooms are simple to keep clean because there's no tray edge or enclosure frame to collect grime. With fewer joins and a level floor, a daily wipe-down is usually all they need.

They also suit households where needs may change, a level floor is easier for young children, for older relatives and for anyone recovering from injury.

Upstairs and downstairs wet rooms

Wet rooms can be installed on either floor, but the floor construction affects how the falls and drainage are formed. Scott will check yours and explain the approach at your free quote visit, and the installation is quoted at a fixed price.

Local to Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire

Harrison's is based in Chesterfield and has been trading since January 2021. We work across the town and the surrounding area, including Staveley, Brimington, Wingerworth, Dronfield, Bolsover, Clay Cross, North Wingfield, Eckington, Killamarsh, Matlock and Alfreton.

Being local means the person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it, and the business answering your call is run by Scott and Laura themselves, not a call centre. It's also why so many of our customers come back, and why we hold a 100% recommendation rating from 38 Facebook reviews.

We're a Derbyshire Trusted Trader and fully insured, with both public liability and employers liability cover in place. If you'd like to check that we cover your street, or you're not sure whether your job is something we can help with, call Scott on 07463 793992 or send the quote form and Laura will get back to you.

Your guarantee and product warranties

Every installation is backed by our 2-year workmanship guarantee. That covers the work we carry out, the fitting, the connections and the finish, so if something we've installed isn't right, we come back and put it right.

Bathroom products such as taps, showers, toilets and furniture also carry their own manufacturer warranties. These vary from product to product. If a product fails under its warranty, we'll organise the replacement for you; the labour to fit the replacement is charged. Scott will explain this clearly when you choose your products, so you know where you stand before anything is ordered.

Supplying your own products

Plenty of customers already know exactly which bath, shower or vanity unit they want. You're welcome to supply your own suite and we'll fit it, or we can supply it for you, whichever is easier.

Tiles are always sourced by the customer. If you're choosing tiles, it's worth doing so early in the process so they're ready in good time. Alternatives such as aqua panels and different flooring options can be shown at a samples visit depending on your selections.

Paying for your bathroom

Quotes are free. Installations are quoted at a fixed price, so the figure you agree to is the figure you plan around. If something unforeseen turns up, for example, damage hidden behind an old bath panel, we'll show you and discuss it before going ahead.

You can pay by card (credit or debit), bank transfer or cash.
